The past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster for many of us with the onslaught of Hurricane Harvey slamming the Texas coastline. By now, you know also about the devastating floods that accompanied this storm. It is just so devastating to see the effects of Hurricane Harvey here. Families are stranded and without food and water.
On another note, this has been an event that has shown the strength, resilence and selflessness of so many in my great state of Texas. All of my posts have carried the hashtag #TexasStrong….and that’s because we are. We help those around us and don’t turn a blind eye to our neighbors. Our Operations Manager, Sarah Harkin and her husband live in the area and have kept us up to date on the latest in weather and flood levels. Her home was spared, but her vehicle didn’t escape the rising flood waters.
Many of my design friends have 4-8 feet of murky flood water in their homes. Seeing their beautiful homes that have often graced the pages of national design magazines, now destroyed, shows us just how quickly our lives can change. No one was spared – Harvey knows no financial status.
I have felt helpless being in Dallas and could only watch from my social media feed as friends shared desperate pleas for pickup from their rooftops with often a trash bag of belongings and the clothes on their backs. And the pets……I am such a pet lover and there are many lost and stranded pets that families were forced to leave behind.
What I have seen is the heroism of others: The lines of boats making runs to flooded homes and carrying scared and distraught people to higher ground. The people who didn’t wait and jumped into action to save their neighborhoods are my ultimate heroes.
I have rounded up a list of how we can help donate to the families (and their pets) affected by Hurricane Harvey:
Click HERE to donate through Red Cross
Disney is also hosting a Day of Giving across all of their digital and social platforms on August 31st. They are taking donations through the American Red Cross to help those in need from the hurricane.
You can help by visiting redcross.org/abc, calling 1-855-999-GIVE or texting HARVEY to 90999.
The Houston SPCA is also taking any and all donations at this time in order to transport animals to safer locations and finding foster homes. You can the Houston SPCA Website and donate and there is also an emergency hotline for endangered animals due to the floods.
Let’s keep all of these families in our prayers through this tough time and stay tuned for ways that I am planning to send relief from the entire team at DMI!!
