If you follow me on Facebook you have seen my rah-rah posts about my organizing success. Truth be told you are probably sick of my gloating as I cross off another major closet or storage space clutter every week or so. You may even be more sick of me by the end of the month, but I am determined to clear out the closets in the first quarter of 2013. It’s so motivating for me to see the before and after pictures of my own messy closets.
This weekend though, I found the absolute coolest SHORTCUT ever! My son’s closet was once the closet for my home office. He is 11 now and moved into that room when he was about 20 months old. (I know, can you believe it let it go this long….please don’t call Hoarders on me!!) I have moved things around in there several times, but this time, I pulled out every box, toy, piece of clothing etc. This is what his room looked like during the madness…and below is the result.
The best part of it is that there was a small filing cabinet in his closet full of documents from 2000-2005. When all removed they filled a large industrial trash bag. And what I thought was going to be months of at-home identity theft protection through shredding turned into the most gleeful drive I have ever had.
I had the bright idea to Google”paper shredding services” and my location. Guess what? There were four places within 15 minutes of me that offer this service so I just loaded up my massive body bag of papers and drove on over. Thirty minutes later I had hoisted that large bag onto a scale at a Pack and Mail place and they poured my docs into a locked bin that will be picked up by a shredding truck that comes by twice a month. My bag weighed 53 lbs and cost me .89cents a pound to shred.
Done and done. I will never shred a bag of documents and old checks myself again. And if you can’t tell, I think this is the most exciting Sunday Shortcut post I have written in a while.
How are your goals for de-cluttering moving along so far in 2013?
