I am a classic overachiever. Always have been. My to-do lists look like this:
- Buy Thanksgiving veggies
- Re-organize pantry
- Clean out closet
- Have wallpaper hung
- Research Twitter hashtags for #deadlines
Really? What makes me think I can get all of these things done by next week? So just like any other deadline I face, I first need to prioritize. Gotta buy those veggies – but not until the day before.
And the pantry? Well that’s pretty important, so I am having my housekeeper come help me with that one. The rest….will wait until the week after Thanksgiving.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by any deadline, design or otherwise, may I suggest this? Cross off everything but the most important ones and breathe easier. Move the next phase of to-do’s to another day or week and only focus on the ones in front of you.
As I live longer, I realize that perfection doesn’t exist and that my days spent with family and friends are much more important than crossing off every single item on my to do list. You have permission to be in the moment…I will.
