Deadline Dilemma: Brizo Fashion Week and Jason Wu Fashion Show Spring 2013

September 10, 2012

When “Designing With a Deadline” for clients, I often have a contingency plan or alternatives in mind to prevent my project from getting off track.

As I watched the Spring 2013 Collection by Jason Wu presented at Fashion Week in New York, I thought about the deadlines Jason must face when designing a collection with a deadline to present at each Fashion Week.  As a guest of Brizo, I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend Jason’s show.

What if a fabric isn’t available?  What if a design doesn’t come to fruition and it must be dropped from the show and another designed quickly to fill its place?  I am sure Jason has many stories behind each collection when it finally comes together and many concessions are made.  But the show must go on.  The same goes for Designing with a Deadline for interiors.

I also thought about the parallels in our designs when it comes to inspiration.  I often receive my best inspiration from travel and photography.  Brizo invited us to attend the afterparty celebrating Jason Wu’s Spring 2013 Collection at MBE Penthouse and we not only screened the show alongside Jason and his team, he also spoke briefly about where he derives his inspiration, as well as the particular era that he referenced to develop this season’s designs.

Jason was especially affected by photography from Lillian Bassman and opened his show with the iconic Carolyn Murphy. Using icons like these in the Spring 2013 Collection only added to the drama factor.

Much like I watch movies from certain eras for inspiration, Jason turned to looks from the past and interpreted them in a fresh and chic new way.

The afterparty and our time with Jason gave me such insight into how the fashion design process and the home design process are so similar.  It also helped me understand why Brizo chose Jason Wu as their design partner in bringing fresh and chic plumbing designs to market.
