I just returned from Kravet’s Blogfest 2012 and I am still on Cloud NINE!!! My personal Deadline Dilemma was how to navigate the Kips Bay Show House in under an hour, see the iconic designers represented there, take pics and mingle with 150+ design bloggers celebrating this year’s kickoff at Kips Bay.
What a whirwind of events and opportunities to meet the best and brightest in Design Blogging and Shelter Publications. To be completely honest, I left Dallas and I even commented to a close friend that I was feeling like I had recently lost my “sparkle” after many months of endless work. Well, boys and girls, after this…what a week of sparkle – so here is my recap for all of you who were wondering what all the hubbub is about:
Day One: ICFF and Kips Bay Decorator Show House
While the day started with cloudy skies and delayed flights, I was still excited to arrive just in time to enjoy the Kips Bay 40th Annual Decorator Show House. (Sadly I missed ICFF, but at least my flight wasn’t cancelled!)
The Aldyn on 60 Riverside Blvd. was the location of this year’s show house and just as we arrived the skies opened up! Rain didn’t dampen my spirit though.
Margaret Russell of Architectural Digest opened with a heartfelt kickoff speech. Her story of how she had a 2:00 a.m. freakout over the gift bags was my favorite moment (see, I’m not the only one who has these moments).
My blurry…er…artictic interpretation of Margaret Russell and Thom Felicia chatting.
I met some of my favorite designers (and also some I didn’t know) in person, and had an opportunity to discuss their rooms with them. Here are a few of my favorites:
Charlotte Moss had an incredible space. She designed the master bedroom and bath and incorporated a wall of greenery with a peephole in both spaces to create an intimate feeling. This was such a great use of a true garden-style since there was a full wall of glass in the master overlooking the living room below. No longer in a fish bowl now, thanks to Charlotte. I also loved the green velvet covering on the walls in the bedroom. Sumptuous!
Charlotte also incorporated a great wall down the hallway using wallpaper from Piet Hein Eeek available at Sylvester and Co. Don’t you love how it draws you into the space?
Check out the great grommets attached with brass eye hooks and leather straps down the outdoor sisal hallway runner from Stark. And you should have smelled the scents she used in the space. You are truly transported when you enter her rooms.
The master bath also had beautiful monogrammed linens from Leontine Linens in my favorite “of the moment” color – lavender. I will make a wild guess that Charlotte’s middle name is Anne???
Did I mention that rug from Orley & Shabahang?
James says that his favorite two things about his space are the use of color and the mix of the modern and antique, like on this great ottoman with hand carved base. I AGREE!
Next up – Alexa Hampton’s bedroom. All I can say is that those lacquered walls by Plateau Painting were yummy. How could I hang a piece of art on those walls? I would shudder at the thought of a nail marring that perfect glossy finish, wouldn’t you?
Alexa also had a beautiful silver metallic wallpaper on the ceilings and a beautiful canopied bed. She has such an elegant style that feels so “now” even though it is truly traditional.
I fell in love with muralist and designer Chuck Fisher. Chuck told me he had lived in Dallas before and just loved our city and went back every chance he could Awww. Check out his work and what a mural can do for your rooms.
I am a collector to the depths of my soul, so walking into Alexander Doherty’s “A Collector’s Bedroom” felt like coming home. And, did I mention he was an absolute doll? Too much!
I also loved the great velvet on the walls of Shawn Henderson’s lounge – see how the moulding is also covered in velvet? And the wall shelf is the perfect solution to my need to constantly move my art collection around. Did I mention the swing? I love whimsy and a sense of humor.
More Blogfest 2012 tomorrow. Can’t wait to share my favorite colors and finishes from my trip!!!
