Holiday Decorating – Joy or Chore?
By Sharon McCormick, Allied ASID

Holiday decorating can either be a joy or a chore. If you’re in the latter camp, using a designer can be a big relief. Each year for certain clients, we design new holiday deorations, re-use the old, and deck the halls! One client goes to Florida the day after Thanksgiving, and when she returns to Connecticut her entire house has been transformed into a winter wonderland. The tree is up and decorated, the garlands and wreaths are hung, and tabletops have been transformed. When she walks in, even new candles are in place just waiting to be lit.

Here are a few of our holiday decorating tips.

1. Start the excitement on the outside. Decorate your front dooor or entry so invitingly that your guests can’t wait to get inside. On this Georgian colonial, traditional Williamsburg-type decorations include a fruited fan over the front door.

2. 1. Don’t fight a room’s color scheme – enhance it. Sharon McCormick Design created this manteldecor  for a client that plays up the room’s beautiful blue wall color with silvery tones.

3.  This is no time to hold back! An abundance of greens and other natural elements celebrates the season, and can remain as winter decorations.

4. The mantel is always a focal point, so give it special attention. If you have collectibles, such as my client’s gold pheasants, which can be worked into the scheme so much the better.

In the vein of no fuss, no muss, we also return to take down and store the decorations, returning rooms to their original condition. I really wish someone would do this for me!

Kim Hoegger

Good Morning friends, hope this post finds you relaxing with a warm cup of coffee or herbal tea if you prefer, but most of all, I hope you have found some time to yourself. Time to sit for a few minutes and think about the upcoming and fast approaching holiday season.

If you are like me, you are crazy busy, and that’s BEFORE you even think about beginning your holiday decorating and entertaining. Taking the time to think through and plan your holiday season will make all the difference in creating a beautiful, meaningful holiday season.

As I sit here at my desk this morning, taking time to think through the holidays, I am determined to do things differently this year. I want to enjoy every moment, and savor every meal.  I want more time for coffee with friends, more time baking cookies with my children and more time enjoying simple holiday tasks like wrapping gifts.; all of which I have found less and less time for with each passing year. This year I want to do it differently…I want simplicity and peace.

In my design business, I practice the art of simple elegance.  I believe that a simply designed space is truly the most elegant. It takes planning and restraint to achieve this delicate balance. So it is true with holiday decorating and entertaining. Creating a simple, elegant holiday season from table to tree will require that you take the time to plan ahead. It may also require eliminating tasks and/or décor that is just too time consuming or cumbersome. How can you simplify your holiday season?

For me this year, simplifying will mean eliminating the multitude of boxes from the attic containing the artificial garland that has adorned my staircase for years. My children are grown now and it’s time for something more organic and natural, it’s time for the real deal…gorgeous greenery from my 75’ tall cedar tree. Accomplishing this goal will require the help of my hubby whom I will have to bribe with a nice warm cup of cider but more likely a toddy of some kind, maybe a buttered rum or a spiced egg nog…yum.

Accomplishing the second item on my list,  “peace “, will be a little more difficult as it will require that I am more focused on taking care of myself. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s so easy to take on too much and thus become grumpy. Trust me, that’s not fun for anyone!

So, I have committed to making time in my schedule to work out even when I think I have no time for it, I am going to MAKE TIME. By doing so, I will feel better and less stressed.  How will you take care of yourself this holiday season?

Enjoy your personal time today and put your thoughts down on paper. Simplify your life…it may mean eliminating a few boxes of artificial garland and vowing to use live greenery every year(my own simple solution this season).  What ever it is…make your holiday a relaxed, memorable one by taking the time to organize and plan ahead. Cheers to a simply elegant holiday season!
