The Wow Factor

While attending Blogfest 2012 in New York last week, I had the opportunity to meet Interiors Magazine Editorial Director, Michael Wollaeger.

I was so excited to chat with Michael and enjoy the lively panel discussion he hosted with Interior Designer, Miles Redd, Marissa Marcantonio of the blog Stylebeat and photographer, Peter Aaron.

As if this weren’t enough excitement, Interiors Magazine has offered us the chance to find our favorite “WOW” factor in their June/July issue and then show you a “WOW” from our own work.  If you haven’t picked it up yet, you are missing out!  My pages are already becoming tattered after reading it several times now.  My favorite “WOW” factor in this issue is the master bath of the San Francisco High Rise designed by Candace Cavanaugh.  The entire space is magnificent, but the master bath’s marble slab walls and herringbone patterened marble flooring are divine.  I also loved her use of recessed medicine cabinets behind the mirrors.

I also love to use tile patterns in my work and love natural and porcelain elements combined.

In this bath designed by Denise McGaha Interiors, the beautiful mosaic tiles and limestone counters created a “WOW” factor for this couple each morning.

Thank you Interiors Magazine for the great panel discussion with one of my idols, Miles Redd and I look forward to reading your next issue.  P.S.  I love the paper edition a wee bit better than digital.  I know…old fashioned I guess!

Blogfest 2012 My “A-HA!” Moment

My second day at Kravet’s Blogfest 2012 was even more exciting than the first!  The editors from House Beautiful wanted to know what inspires me and what “A-HA moment” I have created in my own work.  We heard from designers Jon Call, Michael Herold and Jill Goldberg on their “A-HA moments” in their careers.  Since I opened Denise McGaha Interiors over 10 years ago, I have had the opportunity to meet so many other designers, but hearing the viewpoints of these talented and successful designers gave me a complete understanding that we are all SO similar in what creates the passion in our jobs as interior designers.

I think my “A-HA moment” came when, during the recessioon, I had the opportunity to explore closing our doors and closing the book on owning my design firm.  I left a corporate career to pursue my passion of interior design after 9/11 and decided that life would pass me by sitting at that desk on the 19th floor…if I let it.  But, after a tough three years and the loss of a great base of high-end home builders and many sacrifices by my amazing family to support me, I considered going back to the security of that desk.

After a long talk with my husband who wasn’t a huge fan of my starting my own business in the beginning, he told me “You won’t be happy doing anything else.  Don’t give up now…”

And not long after that, I had the opportunity to create this wonderful space for a local Show House and found that often just after you give up (or think you might) the best opportunities present themselves.

I feel that this project gave me the boost I needed during a dark time in my career and was the bridge to where I am today.  Happy and successful again…doing what I love.  A-HA…
